This Month's Artist Details:

WAKE UP AND LISTEN

Wake Up And Listen (aka WUAL) is a band that specializes in surreal, improvised, collage-based music. It has been active in Sydney, Australia, since 1991. Though members Shannon O'Neill and Adrian Bertram are perhaps now equally well known for their solo work (both in their own names and under pseudonyms such Lieutenant Colonel Spastic Hotwitzer), when they come together its a whole different story.

JULIAN KNOWLES + DONNA HEWITT

After their show stealing performance at Disorientation last year, Julian and Donna perform together for the first time this year.

Julian Knowles is a composer/perfomer and audio artist working with new and emerging technologies. His practice draws heavily on the transformation of location audio and is informed by film sound practices, electro-acoustic, acousmatic and concrete musics and contemporary popular music production techniques, resulting in a personalised sonic language which is exploratory, yet recognises its roots in historical traditions. It challenges the arbitrary distinctions between sound, noise and music and attempts to reveal the inherent musicality in so-called non-musical materials.

Donna Hewitt is a composer/performer working with voice, environmental and computer processed sound. Much of her compositional work involves re-processing microphone captured audio via various digital processes to produce complex musical textures.

GARY BUTLER

Gary has been performing improvised music for over a decade. He has performed as a soloist, and in collaboration with various improvisors including Jim Denley, Adam Simmonds, Rik Rue, Oren Ambarchi, Greg Kingston and Tom Fitzgerald. His interest in extending the range of the guitar has led to him rubbing pizza into the strings, throwing a guitar from a 3rd storey window, nailing a guitar to a cross, and writing a PhD thesis on prepared instruments.

MARQUIS DE SOUND

A man with a spanner hits himself in the head as hard as he can but yet he doth not bleedest amongst his own headjuice yet the headjuice floweth among valleys filled with lice covered pigeon carcasses...so it is with the Marquis De Sound (i think)...formed by pale skinned juice monkeys Noel Power and Josh Shipton(TRIANGLE) and joined by Uncle Science Karl on electric friendship controller...a drone, a loose cannon, a calm before a storm in my chord progression...the Marquis De Sound are your reason for wanting to explode...early...way before your time...and exactly six hours and three minutes ahead of their time.

THE ANTI-DEFENESTRATORS

1 girl, 2 guys and some instruments. The rest is up to fate.

Don't worry - they don't know what they sound like either.

"Touring with the Anti-D's has been the most profound musical experience of my life. I'll never forget the live web cast show from their prison cell in Denmark - wild times" David Hasselhoff, Fishmonger, Ballina.

!!*

!!* (pronounced Bang Bang Splat) has made music ranging from sub-minute instrumentals, alternative cartoon soundtracks through to demented cover versions colliding different musical styles. After contributing to a variety of international compilations for over a decade, they finally present their debut solo performance at Disorientation. Not content to hide behind laptops, !!* will discover if guitars are allowed at electronic performance nights.
